Wise prohibits using its services for certain categories of transactions including gambling, adult content, and weapons, and holds you responsible for making sure your use complies with all laws, not just the ones Wise specifically lists.
This analysis describes what Wise's agreement states, permits, or reserves. It does not constitute a legal determination about enforceability. Regulatory applicability and practical outcomes may vary by jurisdiction, enforcement context, and individual circumstances. Read our methodology
If you use Wise for a transaction that Wise categorizes as prohibited, even unintentionally, your account may be suspended and the transaction blocked or reversed, and you bear the responsibility for legal compliance.
Interpretive note: The scope of the catch-all user responsibility for all applicable laws is operationally ambiguous, particularly for cross-border transactions where the relevant law in the recipient jurisdiction may be unclear to an average retail user.
The updated terms extend the deadline for reporting transaction errors from 60 days to 120 days for all transactions except Send Money transfers. The 120-day period begins either from the first day you could see the error in your online account history or the day Wise sent the first written statement showing the error, whichever comes first. This change gives account holders twice as long to identify and report discrepancies before losing the right to dispute them.
View change record →Removal of explicit list of prohibited transaction categories (gambling, adult content, weapons, sanctions) reduces transparency about use restrictions, though restrictions likely remain under separate Acceptable Use Policy.
View full change record →Explicitly lists prohibited transaction categories (gambling, adult content, weapons) and places compliance burden on users, creating potential liability exposure for users engaging in these activities.
View full change record →If you send money for a purpose that falls into Wise's prohibited categories, your transaction may be blocked and your account suspended without prior warning, and the broad scope of the prohibition, which includes all applicable laws, means you are expected to know the legal requirements of both sending and receiving jurisdictions.
