This is the main legal agreement between you and Sony Interactive Entertainment that governs everything you do on PlayStation — from creating an account and buying games on the PlayStation Store to using PlayStation Plus and PlayStation Video. The most important thing to know is that any digital content you purchase is a license, not a permanent purchase, meaning SIE can restrict or remove your access, and most purchases are non-refundable; additionally, a mandatory arbitration clause limits your ability to sue Sony in court or join a class action. If you want to opt out of arbitration, the agreement requires you to do so in writing within 30 days of first accepting these terms.
This document governs access to and use of PlayStation Services — including PlayStation Store, PlayStation Plus, and PlayStation Video — offered by Sony Interactive Entertainment LLC (SIE), and constitutes a binding contract formed upon account creation, purchase, or continued use after notice of changes. The agreement states that users grant SIE a broad, royalty-free, irrevocable license to use user-generated content, authorizes SIE to terminate or suspend accounts and consoles at its discretion for code of conduct violations, and establishes that all digital content purchases are licensed (not sold) and generally non-refundable. The mandatory individual arbitration clause and class action waiver in Section 14, with a 30-day opt-out window, represent a significant restriction on users' ability to pursue collective legal remedies, though the agreement acknowledges that applicable local laws may limit or override certain terms; additionally, the virtual wallet balance and prepaid codes carry restrictions on refundability and transferability that may create financial exposure for users. The document engages consumer protection frameworks including the FTC Act, the California Consumer Privacy Act (CCPA) for California residents, and COPPA for child accounts, with the Children's Online Privacy Protection Act particularly relevant given the document's detailed child account and parental consent provisions. Compliance teams should note the interaction of the arbitration clause with state-level consumer protection statutes, the cross-border data transfer implications of SIE's global affiliate structure, and the jurisdictional carve-outs the document itself acknowledges for users in certain regions.
