Behavioral Advertising and Third-Party Data Sharing

High severity
Share 𝕏 Share in Share

What it is

We collect information about the advertisements on the Netflix service that you view or interact with, device information (such as resettable device identifiers), IP addresses, inferences we make about you or your household based on data we collect from or about you (such as the types of ads you or your household prefer to see), and information provided by Advertising Companies (such as your demographic information, likely interests they have collected or inferred from your interactions and purchases through their own and other websites and apps). We also collect information on Advertiser websites and apps. We use this information to support advertisements (including behavioral advertisements in accordance with your preferences. "Behavioral Advertisements" are those that are selected based on information about your use and/or interactions with unaffiliated third party services).

Why it matters

This means Netflix is profiling you using data collected well beyond its own platform, which many consumers would not expect from a subscription streaming service, and this data is shared with external companies.

Consumer impact

Netflix collects a wide range of personal data including your full viewing history, voice inputs and transcripts, device identifiers across your home network, and behavioral advertising profiles built from your activity on third-party websites and apps outside of Netflix. Netflix shares this data with external Advertising Companies and service providers, and makes inferences about your household's preferences — meaning data collected about one person on your network may influence how others are profiled. You can opt out of behavioral advertising and the sale or sharing of your personal information by visiting your Netflix account settings or navigating to netflix.com/adchoices.

What you can do

⚠️ These actions may provide transparency or partial mitigation but may not fully address the underlying issue. Effectiveness varies by jurisdiction and individual circumstances.
  • Opt Out of Arbitration
Go to netflix.com/adchoices or visit your Netflix account settings, navigate to 'Privacy and data settings,' and toggle off behavioral advertising and the sale/sharing of your personal information.

Applicable agencies

  • FTC
The FTC has enforcement authority over unfair or deceptive data practices including cross-context behavioral advertising under FTC Act Section 5.
