What it is

When you use EA's cross-platform play features, your account identifiers and related information are shared with other gaming platforms (such as Xbox, PlayStation, Nintendo, Steam) and those platforms' privacy policies then govern how that data is handled.

This analysis describes what EA's agreement states, permits, or reserves. It does not constitute a legal determination about enforceability. Regulatory applicability and practical outcomes may vary by jurisdiction, enforcement context, and individual circumstances. Read our methodology

ConductAtlas Analysis

Why it matters (compliance & governance perspective)

Enabling Cross-Play shares your gaming identity with platforms beyond the one you are playing on, and those platforms' own privacy practices apply to the data they receive, which may differ from EA's policy.

Consumer impact (what this means for users)

Cross-Play users should be aware that their platform ID and usage information is shared with other console and PC platforms, and that the receiving platform's privacy policy governs that data independently of EA's policy. You can disable Cross-Play in the relevant game or platform settings to limit this sharing.

When Cross-Play is enabled and you play with someone on another platform, that other platform may receive your platform's ID (such as Xbox Gamertag, or Online ID of your account for PlayStation™Network) along with other information necessary to enable Cross-Play. In addition, we may provide information regarding your use of Cross-Play features to the platform on which you play our games. You can change your Cross-Play preferences by visiting the game's or your platform's settings menus.

ConductAtlas Analysis

Institutional analysis (Compliance & governance intelligence)

REGULATORY LANDSCAPE: Cross-platform data sharing involves controller-to-controller transfers under GDPR, where each receiving platform becomes an independent data controller for the data it receives. GDPR Articles 26 and 28 govern joint controller and processor arrangements; where platforms act as independent controllers, EA's obligations regarding onward transfer and data subject rights may be limited. CCPA and CPRA apply to the sharing of personal information with third-party platforms for California residents. GOVERNANCE EXPOSURE: Medium. The policy discloses Cross-Play data sharing clearly and provides an opt-out mechanism via settings. The primary governance exposure is whether adequate information about receiving platforms' privacy practices is provided to users at the point of Cross-Play activation, and whether users understand that EA's policy no longer governs data once received by another platform. JURISDICTION FLAGS: EU/EEA users should be informed of cross-platform data transfers as part of GDPR transparency requirements. California residents' sharing with platform partners may constitute 'sharing' under CPRA depending on whether it facilitates cross-context behavioral advertising. The policy notes that information received by platforms is 'subject to their respective privacy notices,' which may not be sufficient transparency under GDPR if users are not directed to those notices. CONTRACT AND VENDOR IMPLICATIONS: Data sharing arrangements with Sony, Microsoft, Nintendo, Valve, and Epic for Cross-Play functionality should be documented under data sharing agreements specifying the purposes and scope of shared data. Whether these platforms act as joint controllers or independent controllers for Cross-Play data has implications for liability allocation and data subject rights fulfillment. COMPLIANCE CONSIDERATIONS: Legal teams should assess whether the Cross-Play data sharing disclosure in EA's policy satisfies GDPR Article 13/14 transparency requirements for disclosing data sharing with specific named recipients. The opt-out mechanism through game or platform settings should be verified as functional and not buried within complex menu structures that could undermine meaningful consent.
