Messages sent through Revolut Messenger are end-to-end encrypted, meaning Revolut itself cannot read them. This also means Revolut cannot recover or provide your messages if you lose access to them or need them for a dispute.
This analysis describes what Revolut's agreement states, permits, or reserves. It does not constitute a legal determination about enforceability. Regulatory applicability and practical outcomes may vary by jurisdiction, enforcement context, and individual circumstances. Read our methodology
While end-to-end encryption protects your message privacy, it also means Revolut cannot assist you if you need to retrieve messages for a dispute or legal purpose, and your messages will be permanently lost if you reinstall the app or change devices.
The updated Terms of Service no longer document the Move Money Rules feature, which previously allowed users to set up automatic fund transfers across account pockets or currency exchanges based on custom conditions. The removal of this documentation means users cannot point to the terms as a reference for how this feature operates, what limits apply, or what fees may be charged. If the feature remains available in the app, its operational parameters are no longer formally described in the binding terms document.

"To ensure any communication with your contacts is kept private, Revolut Messenger is protected using end to end encryption. This means that Revolut cannot access messages in your Revolut Messenger in any circumstances. For example, if you contact customer support in relation to something that has occurred on Revolut Messenger, we will not be able to see your thread. It also means we are unable to provide any information about messages in your Revolut Messenger even if you ask us for it.Excerpt from Revolut's Terms of Service (Superseded URL)
REGULATORY LANDSCAPE: End-to-end encryption in financial services messaging may interact with law enforcement access requirements under the Communications Assistance for Law Enforcement Act and applicable state wiretapping statutes. The terms' explicit statement that Revolut cannot access messages even when asked by the user or customer support represents a design choice with both privacy and operational implications. CFPB oversight of consumer communications channels in financial services may also be relevant. GOVERNANCE EXPOSURE: Low to Medium. The encryption design is a privacy-protective feature, but the permanent loss of messages on device change or app reinstall may create consumer harm in dispute resolution contexts where message evidence is relevant. The terms' statement that Revolut 'cannot' provide message content is technically grounded in the encryption architecture and is disclosed clearly. JURISDICTION FLAGS: Law enforcement access requests in jurisdictions with national security or criminal investigation authority may create tension with the end-to-end encryption design. The document does not address how Revolut responds to lawful interception requests for Messenger content, which may be a compliance gap depending on applicable communications law. CONTRACT AND VENDOR IMPLICATIONS: The encryption architecture and no-backup design should be noted in any compliance or legal hold context, as Revolut Messenger content may be unavailable for litigation hold or regulatory investigation purposes. This is a material operational consideration for any user who uses Revolut Messenger for consequential financial communications. COMPLIANCE CONSIDERATIONS: Legal teams should confirm whether Revolut's encryption design is consistent with applicable lawful interception obligations and whether the no-backup disclosure is adequate to satisfy consumer protection disclosure standards. The interaction between this feature and electronic discovery obligations in litigation should be assessed.
