What it is

Dropbox is not for children under 13. If Dropbox discovers a user is under 13, it will close their account.

Children under 13 who have created Dropbox accounts may have their accounts and all stored data terminated without prior notice if Dropbox discovers their age, as the service is prohibited for users under 13.

Institutional analysis (Compliance & legal intelligence)

(1) REGULATORY FRAMEWORK: This provision directly implicates COPPA, 15 U.S.C. ยง6501 et seq., and its implementing regulations at 16 CFR Part 312, enforced by the FTC. COPPA prohibits online services from collecting personal information from children under 13 without verifiable parental consent. GDPR Art. 8 sets the digital consent age at 16 (with member state flexibility to lower to 13), and EU member states have varying minimum ages. UK GDPR Art. 8 and the Age Appropriate Design Code (Children's Code) impose additional obligations for services likely to be accessed by minors. (2)
