Interest-Based Advertising — Automatic Enrollment

High severity
Share 𝕏 Share in Share

What it is

Amazon-operated advertising enables companies to show you interest-based ads. Interest-based ads, also known as personalized ads, are displayed to you based on information from activities such as purchasing on Amazon, visiting sites that contain Amazon's content or ads, interacting with Amazon's tools or using Amazon's services. Like other online ad networks, we use cookies, web beacons, and similar technologies. You will continue to receive ads even if you opt out, but they will not be based on your interests.

Why it matters

Most users do not realize they are automatically opted into a detailed behavioral advertising program that tracks their activity both on and off Amazon's platforms across the internet.

Consumer impact

Amazon collects an exceptionally broad range of personal data including voice recordings, precise geolocation, biometric-adjacent inferences, financial information, and detailed browsing and purchase history, and uses this data for advertising both on and off Amazon's platforms. This data is shared with Amazon's large network of affiliates, third-party sellers, and advertising partners, meaning your personal information flows well beyond Amazon's own services. You can opt out of interest-based advertising at amazon.com/adpreferences and review and delete Alexa voice recordings in the Alexa Privacy Settings within the Amazon app.

What you can do

⚠️ These actions may provide transparency or partial mitigation but may not fully address the underlying issue. Effectiveness varies by jurisdiction and individual circumstances.
  • Opt Out of Arbitration
Visit amazon.com/adpreferences while logged into your account. Select 'Do Not Personalize Ads from Amazon for this Internet Browser' and save your preferences.

Applicable agencies

  • FTC
The FTC has enforcement authority over unfair or deceptive advertising practices and is actively investigating commercial surveillance including cross-context behavioral advertising under FTC Act Section 5.

  • State AG
California's CPPA and AGs in states with comprehensive privacy laws (CT, CO, VA, TX) have enforcement authority over opt-out mechanisms for targeted advertising.
