You can delete your WhatsApp account and request deletion of your data at any time, but some data may remain in backups for an unspecified period after deletion.
Consumer impact (what this means for users)
You can delete your WhatsApp account and personal data, but WhatsApp retains some data in backup systems for an unspecified period even after account deletion, meaning your data may persist longer than expected and may not be fully erased promptly.
What you can do
⚠️ These actions may provide transparency or partial mitigation but may not fully address the underlying issue. Effectiveness varies by jurisdiction and individual circumstances.
Delete Your Data
Open WhatsApp, go to Settings > Account > Delete My Account, select your country code and enter your phone number, then tap Delete My Account. This permanently deletes your account, message history, and removes you from all WhatsApp groups.
Export Your Data
Before deleting your account, go to Settings > Account > Request Account Info to download a copy of your WhatsApp data. The report will be available within 3 days.
Cross-platform context

The right to delete personal data is a fundamental consumer protection, but the policy's reference to backup retention for an 'unspecified period of time' creates ambiguity about when deletion is actually complete — an issue of particular concern for EU users with GDPR Art. 17 rights.

1. REGULATORY FRAMEWORK: GDPR Art. 17 ('right to erasure' / 'right to be forgotten') requires data to be erased without undue delay when the data subject requests deletion and no legitimate retention ground applies, enforced by the Irish DPC. CCPA/CPRACal. Civ. Code §1798.105 grants California residents the right to request deletion with required response within 45 days. UK GDPR Art. 17 equivalent is enforced by the ICO. The vague 'period of time' backup retention language does not satisfy GDPR's requirement for specific retention periods under Art. 13(2)(a).
