Immediate Account Suspension or Termination Without Notice

What it is

Shopify reserves the right to terminate or suspend access to our Services immediately, without prior notice or liability, for any reason, including if you breach this Acceptable Use Policy. Upon termination, your right to use the Services will immediately cease.

Why it matters

For merchants whose primary sales channel is Shopify, immediate termination without notice or cure period represents an existential business risk, and the absence of any defined appeal or reinstatement process makes this one of the most consequential provisions in the AUP.

Consumer impact

Shopify's AUP primarily affects merchants who build businesses on the platform, as prohibited product categories and enforcement provisions can result in sudden store suspension that disrupts both merchant operations and end-customer shopping experiences. Consumers who shop at Shopify-powered stores benefit from the platform's prohibitions on deceptive practices, counterfeit goods, and fraud-facilitating tools, though the policy does not itself create enforceable consumer rights against merchants. You can protect your business by maintaining independent backups of your customer data, product listings, and order history outside of Shopify's platform.

What you can do

⚠️ These actions may provide transparency or partial mitigation but may not fully address the underlying issue. Effectiveness varies by jurisdiction and individual circumstances.
  • Export Your Data
Log in to your Shopify admin, navigate to Orders, Products, and Customers sections, and use the Export function in each section to download CSV files. Set up automated recurring exports to an external storage system to ensure ongoing data backup.
