Your Runway subscription renews automatically at the current price on the first day after each subscription period ends, and you will be charged without additional notice unless you cancel through your account settings first.
Consumer impact (what this means for users)
Users face automatic financial charges at potentially higher prices each renewal period, with no prorated refund if cancellation occurs after renewal — creating material financial risk particularly for annual subscribers.
What you can do
⚠️ These actions may provide transparency or partial mitigation but may not fully address the underlying issue. Effectiveness varies by jurisdiction and individual circumstances.
Cancel Subscription
Log into your Runway account at app.runwayml.com, navigate to the 'Plans & Billing' page, and select the option to cancel your subscription before your next renewal date. You will retain access until the end of your current paid period but will not receive a prorated refund.
Cross-platform context
See how other platforms handle Automatic Subscription Renewal and similar clauses.
Automatic renewal at 'then-current' pricing means your fees can increase at renewal without requiring explicit agreement, and you will not receive a prorated refund if you cancel mid-period.
View original clause language
If you purchase a subscription to the Services, Company will automatically charge your payment method each renewal period for the then-current subscription fee until you cancel or when terminated in accordance with the Agreement. After your initial subscription period, and again after any subsequent subscription period, your subscription will automatically commence on the first day following the end of such period and continue for an additional equivalent period, at Company's then-current price for such subscription.
REGULATORY FRAMEWORK: This provision is subject to the California Automatic Renewal Law (Cal. Bus. & Prof. Code §§17600–17606), which requires clear and conspicuous disclosure of auto-renewal terms, affirmative consent, and easy cancellation mechanisms. Similar obligations exist under New York's Automatic Renewal Law (NY GOL §527), Illinois Consumer Fraud Act, and FTC Act Section 5 (unfair or deceptive practices), enforced by the FTC and state AGs. The FTC's 'click-to-cancel' rule (effective 2025) imposes additional requirements for subscription cancellation simplicity.
