What it is

All Google Play subscriptions automatically renew and charge your payment method each billing cycle. If you cancel, you keep access until the end of the period you already paid for but receive no refund for the unused time.

This analysis describes what Google Play Store's agreement states, permits, or reserves. It does not constitute a legal determination about enforceability. Regulatory applicability and practical outcomes may vary by jurisdiction, enforcement context, and individual circumstances. Read our methodology

ConductAtlas Analysis

Why it matters (compliance & governance perspective)

Consumers who forget to cancel before a renewal date will be charged for a full additional billing period with no refund for unused days, and annual subscriptions in particular can result in unexpected charges of significant amounts.

Consumer impact (what this means for users)

A consumer who forgets to cancel an annual subscription before its renewal date will be charged for a full year immediately and will not receive a prorated refund for unused months, creating significant financial risk particularly for higher-priced subscription services.

What you can do

  • Cancel Subscription
To cancel a Google Play subscription, open the Google Play app, tap your profile icon, go to Payments & subscriptions > Subscriptions, select the subscription you want to cancel, and tap Cancel subscription. Cancel before the end of your current billing period to avoid the next charge.

Subscriptions are automatically charged each billing period (whether weekly, monthly, annually, or another period), and you may be charged no earlier than 24 hours before the beginning of each billing period. You may cancel a subscription at any time before the end of the applicable billing period as described in the Help Center, and the cancellation will apply to the next period. For example, if you purchase a monthly subscription, you may cancel that subscription at any time during any month of the subscription, and the subscription will be cancelled at the end of your then-current billing period. You will not receive a refund for the current billing period, except as otherwise provided in Google Play's Refund Policy (for example where Content is defective).

ConductAtlas Analysis

Institutional analysis (Compliance & governance intelligence)

(1) REGULATORY FRAMEWORK: This provision implicates the FTC's Negative Option Rule (16 CFR Part 425) as amended in 2023, which requires clear and conspicuous disclosure of auto-renewal terms before subscription enrollment. California's Automatic Renewal Law (ARL, Cal. Bus. & Prof. Code §17600 et seq.) requires affirmative consent to auto-renewal and prorated cancellation refunds in some circumstances. New York SB 1475 (automatic renewal law) and similar state statutes apply. ROSCA (15 U.S.C. §8403) prohibits charging for internet-based services without a consumer's express informed consent. EU Consumer Rights Directive 2011/83/EU Art. 22 prohibits default pre-ticked subscription boxes. Enforcement authority rests with the FTC, California AG, and state attorneys general. (2)
