What it is

Tinder subscriptions (such as Tinder Gold or Tinder Plus) automatically renew and continue charging your linked payment account until you actively cancel them. Cancellation processes vary depending on whether you subscribed through the Apple App Store, Google Play, or Tinder's website.

This analysis describes what Tinder's agreement states, permits, or reserves. It does not constitute a legal determination about enforceability. Regulatory applicability and practical outcomes may vary by jurisdiction, enforcement context, and individual circumstances. Read our methodology

What you can do

⚠️ These actions may provide transparency or partial mitigation but may not fully address the underlying issue. Effectiveness varies by jurisdiction and individual circumstances.
  • Cancel Subscription
To cancel your Tinder subscription, go to the platform through which you subscribed: for Apple App Store subscriptions, go to Settings > Apple ID > Subscriptions on your iPhone; for Google Play subscriptions, open Google Play > Account > Subscriptions; for subscriptions purchased on Tinder's website, log in at gotinder.com and manage your subscription in account settings. Cancel before the renewal date to avoid the next charge.

Tinder may offer products and services for purchase ('in-app purchase') through iTunes, Google Play or other external services authorized by Tinder (each, an 'External Service,' and any purchases made thereon, 'External Service Purchase'). If you choose to make an in-app purchase, you will be prompted to enter details for your account with the External Service ('your External Service Account'), and your External Service Account will be charged for the in-app purchase in accordance with the terms disclosed to you at the time of purchase as well as the general terms applicable to your External Service Account. Some External Services may charge you sales tax, depending on where you live, which may change from time to time. If your External Service Purchase includes an automatically renewing subscription, your External Service Account will continue to be periodically charged for the subscription until you cancel.

ConductAtlas Analysis

Institutional analysis (Compliance & governance intelligence)

REGULATORY LANDSCAPE: Auto-renewal provisions in consumer subscription services engage California's Automatic Renewal Law (ARL), which requires clear and conspicuous disclosure of auto-renewal terms before purchase and a simple cancellation mechanism. The FTC's Negative Option Rule, updated in 2023, imposes similar disclosure and cancellation requirements at the federal level. The FTC Act's prohibition on unfair or deceptive practices applies to subscription billing practices broadly. GOVERNANCE EXPOSURE: Medium. Auto-renewal practices in consumer-facing subscription services are a known FTC and state AG enforcement priority. The key compliance question is whether Tinder's pre-purchase disclosures are sufficiently clear and conspicuous across all acquisition channels, including third-party app stores where Tinder has limited control over disclosure presentation. JURISDICTION FLAGS: California presents the highest exposure under the ARL, which requires affirmative consent to auto-renewal terms and a prominently disclosed cancellation mechanism. New York, Vermont, and North Carolina also have auto-renewal statutes. EU users may have additional rights under the Consumer Rights Directive regarding pre-contractual information and cancellation periods. CONTRACT AND VENDOR IMPLICATIONS: Because subscriptions are processed through Apple App Store, Google Play, and Tinder's own payment infrastructure, refund and cancellation rights differ by channel. This creates a fragmented consumer experience that may complicate compliance with uniform disclosure requirements. Legal teams should confirm whether Tinder's terms align with each external service's own refund policies. COMPLIANCE CONSIDERATIONS: Compliance teams should audit whether auto-renewal disclosures at the point of purchase meet the FTC Negative Option Rule's clear and conspicuous standard across all subscription channels. The cancellation mechanism should be reviewed for simplicity as required by the updated FTC rule. California ARL compliance should be specifically assessed for both in-app and web subscription flows.
