No Refunds Policy

Medium severity
Share 𝕏 Share in Share

What it is

Netflix will not refund your subscription payment under any circumstances — if you cancel mid-month, you keep access until the end of the billing period but receive no money back.

Consumer impact (what this means for users)

This provision means that subscription fees charged to your payment method are non-refundable under all circumstances, and any credits or discounts Netflix chooses to offer are entirely at Netflix's discretion with no obligation to provide them consistently.

What you can do

⚠️ These actions may provide transparency or partial mitigation but may not fully address the underlying issue. Effectiveness varies by jurisdiction and individual circumstances.
  • Cancel Subscription
Go to netflix.com/account, select 'Cancel Membership', and follow the prompts. Cancel before your next billing date to avoid being charged for another billing cycle — no refund will be issued for the current period.
  • Dispute a Fee
    Within 60 days
If Netflix charges you incorrectly, contact your bank or credit card issuer to initiate a chargeback under the Fair Credit Billing Act within 60 days of the statement date. Gather evidence of the disputed charge and any communications with Netflix.

Why it matters (compliance & risk perspective)

If Netflix experiences a service outage, removes content you paid to watch, or makes unilateral changes to your plan, you have no contractual right to a refund — leaving you financially exposed with no recourse other than arbitration.

View original clause language
Payments are nonrefundable and there are no refunds or credits for partially used subscription periods. Following any cancellation, however, you will continue to have access to the service through the end of your current billing period. At any time, and for any reason, we may provide a refund, discount, or other consideration to some or all of our members ("credits"). The amount and form of such credits, and the decision to provide them, are at our sole and absolute discretion. The provision of credits in one instance does not entitle you to credits in the future for similar instances, nor does it obligate us to provide credits in the future, under any circumstance.

Institutional analysis (Compliance & legal intelligence)

(1) REGULATORY FRAMEWORK: This provision engages the FTC's Negative Option Rule (16 CFR Part 425) and ROSCA (15 U.S.C. § 8403) regarding clear disclosure of subscription billing terms. State automatic renewal laws — particularly California's Automatic Renewal Law (Cal. Bus. & Prof. Code §§ 17600-17606) — require that no-refund policies be clearly disclosed at the point of purchase. The FTC Act Section 5 prohibition on unfair or deceptive acts applies to subscription billing practices. The FTC's October 2024 final rule on negative option marketing further tightens disclosure and cancellation requirements. (2)
