What it is

Realms is a paid subscription service; you cannot sell, rent, transfer, or profit from giving others access to your Realm, and cancellation refunds are governed by the store or platform where you purchased.

This analysis describes what Minecraft's agreement states, permits, or reserves. It does not constitute a legal determination about enforceability. Regulatory applicability and practical outcomes may vary by jurisdiction, enforcement context, and individual circumstances. Read our methodology

ConductAtlas Analysis

Why it matters (compliance & governance perspective)

The clause operationalizes Realms as a non-transferable subscription tied to individual accounts and establishes usage restrictions that preserve the service's subscription-based economic model by prohibiting commercial intermediation of access rights.

Interpretive note: Refund and cancellation rights depend on third-party platform policies that are not reproduced in this EULA; statutory consumer rights in the EU, UK, and certain US states may supersede platform-specific cancellation rules.

Change history

removed Jun 12, 2026

This subscription-related provision was replaced with more restrictive terms emphasizing licensing rather than purchase, effectively narrowing user rights.

Consumer impact (what this means for users)

Realms subscribers who cancel after their subscription begins are subject to the refund and cancellation rules of the platform or store through which they purchased, not a unified Mojang policy; users should review platform-specific terms before purchasing to understand their cancellation rights.

What you can do

⚠️ These actions may provide transparency or partial mitigation but may not fully address the underlying issue. Effectiveness varies by jurisdiction and individual circumstances.
  • Cancel Subscription
To cancel a Realms subscription, navigate to the subscription management section of the platform or store where you purchased Realms and follow that platform's cancellation process. Refund eligibility is determined by the applicable platform's rules.

Realms is a subscription service and the cost is as detailed on the applicable purchase pages and / or platform at the time of purchase, or the purchase price of the redeemable card or gift code. The terms and conditions of the applicable purchase pages, platform, redeemable card and / or gift code shall also apply in respect of the purchase of Realms. Realms is a service that commences as soon as your Realm is available for use. If you decide to cancel your Realm after you have already purchased it, your cancellation will be subject to the applicable store or platform rules. However you cannot do the following: sell, lease, rent, transfer, give away, or otherwise deal in access to your Realm or receive financial, commercial or other benefits for letting other people play on your Realm.

ConductAtlas Analysis

Institutional analysis (Compliance & governance intelligence)

1) REGULATORY LANDSCAPE: The subscription auto-renewal and cancellation framework engages consumer protection regulations in the EU (including the Consumer Rights Directive regarding digital services), the UK, and US state laws including California's automatic renewal law (Business and Professions Code Section 17600 et seq.). The delegation of refund terms to third-party platform rules may create compliance complexity where platform policies differ from statutory consumer rights. 2) GOVERNANCE EXPOSURE: Medium. The service commencement clause (service begins as soon as the Realm is available) combined with deferred cancellation terms to platform rules may limit refund rights in practice. EU users exercising the right of withdrawal from digital services should note the Digital Content Directive's interaction with this commencement provision. 3) JURISDICTION FLAGS: California's automatic renewal law requires clear disclosure of subscription terms and cancellation mechanisms; compliance depends on what the applicable purchase platform discloses. EU and UK users may have statutory cancellation rights that supersede the platform delegation language in this provision. 4) CONTRACT AND VENDOR IMPLICATIONS: Platform partners distributing Realms subscriptions (Sony PlayStation, Nintendo, Apple iOS, Google Play, Steam) carry the primary refund and cancellation obligation in this framework. Organizations or resellers distributing Realms gift codes should ensure their own terms align with consumer protection requirements in their jurisdictions. 5) COMPLIANCE CONSIDERATIONS: Legal teams should audit the cancellation and refund terms across each platform through which Realms is sold to confirm that statutory consumer rights are met in each jurisdiction. The no-commercial-benefit restriction on Realm access should be communicated clearly to subscribers who may consider community or event uses of their Realm.
