What it is

Patreon membership subscriptions automatically renew on a monthly or annual basis until cancelled by the user through membership settings. Subscriptions that include free trials or gifted access convert to paid auto-renewing subscriptions at the end of the trial or gift period unless cancelled before that date, and the subscription charge amount may increase with notice to the user.

This analysis describes what Patreon's agreement states, permits, or reserves. It does not constitute a legal determination about enforceability. Regulatory applicability and practical outcomes may vary by jurisdiction, enforcement context, and individual circumstances. Read our methodology

Each type of paid subscription automatically renews monthly (for monthly and per-creation memberships) or annually (for annual memberships) until you cancel via your membership settings. If your subscription includes a free trial or initial gifted access, then, unless you cancel via your membership settings before your free trial or initial gifted access ends, you will be charged for the first time after the specified free trial or initial gift period ends and you'll start an automatically renewing paid subscription on Patreon of the type you selected. The amount you are charged for a membership subscription may increase with notice to you.

ConductAtlas Analysis

Institutional analysis (regulatory & governance intelligence)

(1) REGULATORY LANDSCAPE: Auto-renewal subscription terms and free trial conversion charges engage the FTC's Negative Option Rule, which requires clear and conspicuous disclosure of auto-renewal terms, affirmative consent before charging, and simple cancellation mechanisms. California's Automatic Renewal Law similarly requires specific disclosure and consent for automatically renewing subscriptions and free trial conversions. The document states that cancellation is available via membership settings, which satisfies a basic accessibility requirement, but the adequacy of pre-charge disclosures for free trial conversions is a regulatory review area. (2) GOVERNANCE EXPOSURE: Medium. Free trial conversion to paid subscription is a common regulatory focus area under FTC and state automatic renewal laws. The variable renewal amount, which may increase with notice, creates a disclosure adequacy consideration regarding whether the notice mechanism meets regulatory standards for clear and conspicuous communication. (3) JURISDICTION FLAGS: California's Automatic Renewal Law creates heightened disclosure and consent requirements for California subscribers, including specific requirements for material changes to subscription terms such as price increases. EU consumer protection directives may impose additional requirements for auto-renewal contracts. (4) CONTRACT AND VENDOR IMPLICATIONS: Creators offering free trials or discounted first-period subscriptions should be aware that Patreon manages the billing and conversion mechanism, and that creator-configured prices may be subject to the automatic price adjustment authority described elsewhere in the terms. (5) COMPLIANCE CONSIDERATIONS: Compliance teams should verify that Patreon's pre-trial and pre-subscription disclosure mechanisms meet FTC Negative Option Rule and applicable state automatic renewal law requirements, including the adequacy of notice for price increases at renewal.
