What it is

The agreement states that all in-app microtransaction purchases are final and non-refundable, that unused add-on features have no real-world monetary value, and that users will not receive compensation for unused add-on features upon account closure, whether voluntary or involuntary.

This analysis describes what Grindr's agreement states, permits, or reserves. It does not constitute a legal determination about enforceability. Regulatory applicability and practical outcomes may vary by jurisdiction, enforcement context, and individual circumstances. Read our methodology

ConductAtlas Analysis

Why it matters (compliance & governance perspective)

This provision establishes that add-on feature balances do not constitute stored value or real-world currency equivalents, which affects the consumer protection and financial regulatory treatment of these purchases. The non-refundable and no-compensation-on-closure terms mean users who purchase add-on features and subsequently have their accounts closed involuntarily forfeit those purchases without recourse under the default terms.

Interpretive note: The enforceability of the no-real-world-value characterization against state escheatment law requirements and EU/UK consumer refund rights depends on jurisdiction and applicable regulatory interpretation.

ALL MICROTRANSACTIONS PURCHASES MADE THROUGH THE GRINDR SERVICES ARE FINAL AND NON-REFUNDABLE, EXCEPT AS OTHERWISE REQUIRED BY APPLICABLE LAW, INCLUDING AS PROVIDED IN THE SPECIAL TERMS FOR INTERNATIONAL USERS. YOU ACKNOWLEDGE THAT, SUBJECT TO APPLICABLE LAW, GRINDR IS NOT REQUIRED TO PROVIDE A REFUND FOR ANY REASON, AND THAT YOU WILL NOT RECEIVE MONEY OR OTHER COMPENSATION FOR UNUSED ADD-ON FEATURES WHEN AN ACCOUNT IS CLOSED, WHETHER SUCH CLOSURE WAS VOLUNTARY OR INVOLUNTARY. Any add-on feature balance shown in Your User Account does not constitute a real-world balance or reflect any stored value but instead constitutes a measurement of the extent of Your license.

ConductAtlas Analysis

Institutional analysis (regulatory & governance intelligence)

REGULATORY LANDSCAPE: The characterization of add-on features as a license rather than stored value is relevant to state unclaimed property (escheatment) laws, which may require companies to remit unused digital balances to state authorities after a dormancy period. Some state consumer protection statutes and the FTC's guidance on virtual currency and in-app purchases may also interact with the no-real-world-value characterization. EU consumer protection directives and UK consumer contract regulations may impose refund rights for digital purchases that supersede the non-refundable term for international users. GOVERNANCE EXPOSURE: Medium. The no-compensation-on-involuntary-closure provision creates particular exposure in cases where Grindr terminates a user's account (as permitted under the sole discretion termination clause), resulting in forfeiture of purchased add-on features. The interaction between account termination rights and microtransaction forfeiture should be assessed against applicable consumer protection requirements. JURISDICTION FLAGS: California consumer protection law and ARL may interact with the no-refund policy for digital purchases. EU consumer protection directives, particularly the Consumer Rights Directive, impose cooling-off period rights for digital content purchases that may supersede the final-sale characterization for EEA users. UK consumer contract regulations provide similar protections. CONTRACT AND VENDOR IMPLICATIONS: The license-not-stored-value characterization should be assessed against applicable state escheatment laws, as some jurisdictions have taken the position that unredeemed digital balances may constitute abandoned property subject to remittance requirements regardless of contractual characterization. COMPLIANCE CONSIDERATIONS: Compliance teams should verify whether the license characterization of add-on feature balances satisfies applicable state unclaimed property law requirements, and whether the non-refundable policy for involuntary account closure complies with consumer protection requirements in jurisdictions where Grindr operates.
