Automated Decision-Making and Profiling

High severity
Share 𝕏 Share in Share

Why it matters

Automated deactivation decisions can instantly end a driver's ability to earn income on the platform, and the policy does not clearly guarantee a meaningful right to human review of such decisions in all jurisdictions.

Consumer impact

Uber's driver privacy policy enables extensive and continuous data collection including precise real-time geolocation even when the app is backgrounded, biometric identity verification data, financial account details, and criminal background check results — all of which are shared with a wide range of third parties including insurers, government authorities, and advertising partners. Drivers have limited ability to opt out of core data collection practices since most are tied to contractual necessity for platform access, meaning refusing consent may mean losing access to the platform entirely. You can request access to, correction of, or deletion of your personal data by navigating to Privacy Settings within the Uber driver app.

Applicable agencies

  • FTC
The FTC has authority over unfair or deceptive practices in automated decision-making systems affecting workers, and has issued policy guidance on AI and algorithmic accountability under FTC Act Section 5.
