Data Sharing with Third Parties

Medium severity

What it is

We do not share your personal information with companies, organizations, or individuals outside of Google except in the following cases: With your consent. With domain administrators. For external processing. For legal reasons. We provide personal information to our affiliates and other trusted businesses or persons to process it for us, based on our instructions and in compliance with our Privacy Policy and any other appropriate confidentiality and security measures.

Why it matters

Your Google account data may be accessible to your employer or school administrator if you use a Google Workspace account, and is shared with a broad network of 'trusted businesses' whose identities are not individually named in the policy.

Consumer impact

Google collects an exceptionally broad range of personal data — including precise location, voice and audio recordings, search and browsing history, app usage, and inferred characteristics like health interests and political views — across all its services and combines them into a unified profile used primarily for targeted advertising. This means even routine activities like searching, watching YouTube, or using Google Maps contribute to an advertising dossier that follows you across the web, including on non-Google websites through the Google Display Network. You can review, edit, or delete your data by visiting myaccount.google.com and managing your Activity Controls, Location History, and Ad Settings.

What you can do

⚠️ These actions may provide transparency or partial mitigation but may not fully address the underlying issue. Effectiveness varies by jurisdiction and individual circumstances.
  • Export Your Data
Go to takeout.google.com, select the Google services you want to export data from, choose your file format and delivery method, and click 'Create export' to download a copy of all personal data Google holds about you.

Applicable agencies

  • FTC
The FTC has enforcement authority over deceptive or unfair data sharing practices under FTC Act Section 5, and has previously taken action against Google for unauthorized sharing of personal data.
