Minors and Age Requirements

Medium severity

Why it matters

Parents and guardians should be aware that GitHub collects account data from users as young as 13, and minors using the platform are subject to the same terms and content exposure as adults.

Consumer impact

GitHub users grant the platform a broad license to reproduce and display their publicly posted content, and accept significant limitations on GitHub's liability — including a cap of 12 months of fees paid in damages. GitHub reserves the right to suspend or terminate accounts for policy violations, with or without notice in some cases, which could disrupt access to critical code repositories. You can export and back up your repositories at any time through GitHub's data export tools at https://github.com/settings/admin.

Applicable agencies

  • FTC
The FTC enforces COPPA, which regulates the collection of personal data from children under 13, directly applicable to GitHub's age restriction and data collection practices.
