Broad IP and AI Content License

High severity
Share 𝕏 Share in Share

What it is

You grant LinkedIn a nonexclusive, royalty-free, transferable, and sublicensable license to use, copy, modify, distribute, publish, and process, information and content that you provide through our Services and the services of others, without any further consent, notice and/or compensation to you or others.

Why it matters

This license is broad enough to cover AI training and machine learning, meaning LinkedIn can use your professional content to develop AI products, and you cannot withdraw consent retroactively for content already processed.

Consumer impact

LinkedIn's User Agreement grants the company a broad, royalty-free, worldwide license to use any content you post — including photos, articles, and videos — which extends to AI training and service development and persists beyond account deletion in some circumstances. LinkedIn's liability to you is capped at the greater of fees paid in the past twelve months or $1,000, which severely limits your ability to recover damages even for serious service failures. You can review and manage your privacy and data settings, including AI data usage preferences, at linkedin.com/psettings.

What you can do

⚠️ These actions may provide transparency or partial mitigation but may not fully address the underlying issue. Effectiveness varies by jurisdiction and individual circumstances.
  • Export Your Data
Go to linkedin.com/psettings, navigate to 'Data privacy' then 'How LinkedIn uses your data', and review AI data usage preferences. You can also request a data export under 'Get a copy of your data'.

Applicable agencies

  • FTC
The FTC has enforcement authority over unfair or deceptive data practices under Section 5 of the FTC Act, including undisclosed use of consumer content for AI training.
