Business Domain Account Monitoring

Medium severity
Share 𝕏 Share in Share

What it is

If you use an email address owned by your employer or another organization, your Account may be linked to the organization's Anthropic enterprise account, and the organization's administrator may be able to monitor and control the Account, including having access to Materials (defined below). We will provide notice to you before linking your Account to an organization's enterprise account. However, if the organization is responsible for notifying you or has already informed you that it may monitor and control your Account, we may not provide additional notice.

Why it matters

Employees using work email addresses may unknowingly expose personal or sensitive Claude conversations to their employer, as Anthropic can link individual accounts to enterprise accounts with employer oversight.

Consumer impact

Anthropic's Consumer Terms permit the company to use your conversations, inputs, and outputs to train AI models by default, with a limited opt-out that does not apply when you provide feedback or when your content is flagged for safety review. Subscriptions auto-renew and fees are non-refundable upon cancellation, meaning you could be charged for a full billing period even if you cancel. You can opt out of conversation data being used for model training by navigating to your Claude.ai account settings and disabling the training opt-out toggle.

What you can do

⚠️ These actions may provide transparency or partial mitigation but may not fully address the underlying issue. Effectiveness varies by jurisdiction and individual circumstances.
  • Close Your Account
If you are concerned about employer access to your Claude.ai conversations, close your work-email account by emailing support@anthropic.com and create a new account using a personal email address. This will prevent your employer's enterprise administrator from accessing future conversations.

Applicable agencies

  • FTC
The FTC has authority under Section 5 of the FTC Act over deceptive or unfair practices related to inadequate disclosure of employer access to consumer accounts.
